Day 11

Families are like fudge...mostly sweet with a few nuts -- Anonymous

I've always thought of families like granola -- a little bit of fruit and nuts mixed with honey and then toasted for wholesome goodness! Families are fun -- what would we do without all those little idiosyncrasies to laugh about. At family dinners, I love to sometimes just sit back and listen to all the joking that goes on. It makes me smile. I lived abroad when our oldest DD was born. Over the first year of her life I really yearned to be back home -- closer to family. When I look back on my own childhood, it is filled with memories of Sunday dinners with Grandma and visits to other relative further afield. Being abroad, I felt like my child was growing up without this connection. Unfortunately, the two sides of the family live on different sides of the country, so we had to settle to be near one or other -- DH's job decided that. While I am so glad to be near, that my children better know their Aunts and Uncles and Grandparents and GiGi's, I do still often wish it were more. So often it is easy to get wrapped in our lives and to dos. I do my best and I guess that is all I can do. Unexpectedly though, I have found that my bond with my own siblings (two sisters and a brother) has grown much stronger. Maybe that is because we are all adults now, maybe because of similar shared experiences -- college, marriage, kids -- but mainly, I think, because of proximity, more time together. I'll treasure that forever!

Twitterings: This pic was actually taken on the 12th at my Sister's (middle) Baby Shower -- we are expecting to grow by another little girl next month! I'm hoping my new niece arrives on Valentine's Day :)
