Day 17

"Imagination is the highest kite you can fly." -- Lauren Bacall

I would not say that I am an imaginative person. Creative, somewhat, but not necessarily imaginative. Although, with small kids, their fantastic imagination often helps to spark my own. I often marvel at how easily my children can create fantasy worlds and stories out of anything -- a plain cardboard box becomes a soaring jet plane or a tent made from a sheet draped over the table becomes a cave in Africa. I like to help them create realistic props to make their imaginative world come more to life -- like drawing on the box and cutting out windows and doors to make it look more like the apartment their stuffed animals are living in....It's amazing as well to watch my children with a friend, of perhaps the other sex or a different temperament, and see how they meld their imaginations together. I remember once watching my daughter play "farm animals in trouble" -- she was playing with her animals on the farmstead while her slightly older (male) cousin attacked the farm with dinosaurs and bombs -- they had somehow managed to find common ground and were both enjoying themselves immensely. It makes me a little sad to realize that I have lost that imaginative streak, but I am glad that my children have more than enough to share with me -- it keeps me young at heart.
